RYA - ICC - International Certificate of Competence

Do I Need a Licence and What is an ICC?

An ICC (International Certificate of Competence) is usually essential if you are operating your own vessel or a charter vessel, when overseas.  Many European (and additional countries outside of the EU) may require Skippers of various craft, to provide evidence of their competence in the use and operation of the pleasure craft they are in charge of.  It is an assurance from one government to another, that the holder of the certificate is sufficiently competent of operating the craft, despite not holding the certificate of the visiting country's.

ICC requirements will differ and are relevant to the vessel you are operating.  There are 4 different ICC's issued by the RYA:  PWC (Jetski), Sailing (up to 24m), Power (up to 10m) and Power (over 10m).  You may be required to hold more than one ICC, if you operate different vessel types.

Who Can Apply for an ICC?

The UK Government has accepted Resolution No.40 and has authorised the RYA to issue a UK ICC on its behalf.   To check that you will qualify for a UK issued ICC, visit the "RYA's ICC" page via link.

How Do I Qualify for an ICC?

This will depend on your level of experience or qualification.  Successful completion of certain RYA Training Courses will qualify you to operate a particular craft and provide suitable competence, through the completed course syllabus.  In this case an ICC can be issued, as proof of competence has been gained through the training undertaken.
For those that have gained experience from other means, i.e. self taught, completion of non RYA courses or just through time and experience gained operating a particular class of vessel, the completion of the Direct Assessment at a RYA Recognised Training Centre, can be undertaken to prove competence.
This can be arranged with your chosen Centre.  Information about the ICC Assessment can be found via the 'ICC Assessment' section by following the link "About the UK ICC"

What is the Cost for an ICC?

The current cost for an ICC can be found under the heading 'Charges' , on the application form, within the link to the * "RYA Application for an ICC"
*All enquiries regarding ICC applications, should be directed to the RYA.  Solent Boat Training do NOT issue the ICC.

Don't Forget Your SRC - VHF Operators Licence

As a Skipper
, it is vital that you can communicate correctly, effectively and with confidence.  This will ensure the safety of yourself, your crew and others around you.  Having an understanding of how and when to make that important call, as well as utilising one of the most important elements of your boats safety equipment, is a skill which can not be overlooked.
Remember it is a legal requirement to hold the Short Range Certificate to operate VHF equipment (other than in an Emergency situation).  More and more authorities and officials are checking that the Skipper is in possession of the SRC, to ensure they are competent operators and licenced.
Solent boat Training run both classroom based and online RYA VHF courses all year round.  See our "RYA VHF Course" page for information.
