The RYA Powerboat Instructors Skills Assessment is a one-day pre-entry requirement prior to attending the RYA Powerboat Instructors Course.


A RYA Trainer will assess a candidate's powerboat handling skills and theoretical knowledge to ensure they meet the required standard to attend the Powerboat Instructors course, where successful candidates can teach the Powerboat Level 2 course. 



Key Aspects of the Skills Assessment:

Practical Skills:


Boat Handling: Demonstrate control at various speeds, whilst undertaking manoeuvres within close quarters, turning and berthing.

    Navigation: Utilize charts, compasses and other navigation tools to follow planned routes.

    Safety & Regulations: Show understanding of essential boating safety practices, including Rules of the Road (COLREGS) and  emergency procedures.

    Man Overboard: Perform Safe & Effective approach and recovery of a person overboard. 


Theoretical Skills:


Basic Navigation: Understanding of charts, tides, buoyage and basic collision regulations.

Boat Knowledge: Understanding of boat systems, engine operation and safety equipment required.

Successful completion allows candidates to progress to the RYA Powerboat Instructor course.
