How To Get Back Into Boating?
08/09/2026
Not sure where the best place is to re-start.
At Solent Boat Training we are asked many questions, but one of the most common is, "How Do I Get Back Into Boating?".
For many different reasons, people find themselves moving away from boating. This might be due to a change in geographical location, finding it too difficult to get to a suitable boating location. It may be due to a change in circumstances, i.e. additions to the family, an increase in work commitments or even losing touch with those that you used to boat with.
Whatever the reason, there are many of our customers and clients who wish to pursue their boating dream or re-ignite the feeling that many different types of water activities can provide.
Whether it is Sailing, Powerboating or Motor Cruising, there are plenty of opportunities available.
So where do you start? Well, the fundamentals of boating haven't really changed over the years. Vessels need to float, and they move in a direction dependent on wind and tide, which affects them. However, technology has come a long way in a relatively short period of time, so if you haven't managed to venture out on a modern day sailing yacht, powerboat or motor cruiser, then you will be presented with an array of gadgets and wizardry that might seem daunting at first.
Solent Boat Training offer a number of options, from Powerboat Refresher Days, Day Sailing or multiple Experience & Mileage Building Events, to bespoke training, conducted on your own vessel to familiarise you with your own vessel's systems, whilst also gaining more confidence.
Maybe you would like to introduce someone else to boating, then why not join them and share the experience?
Or of course there is the option to attend one of the Starter courses, such as the RYA Powerboat Level 2, RYA Motor Cruising Helmsman or even the RYA Start Yachting course. Yes, much of what you will cover during these beginner courses, you would have completed before, but it will give you the opportunity to discuss with your instructor, where to go next to achieve your chosen goal. Oh, and of course blow away a few of those cobwebs, whilst maybe learning new methods and skills on the way.
Many of our events can be found on our “Live Course Calendar”. However, if you are looking at something a little more bespoke or private, we can arrange that also.
To discuss your options, get in touch via our “Contact Us” page, and we will be happy to advise.
