Learn to Boat Locally - Solent Boat Training

Many local boaters across Hampshire and the Solent area, are looking to build confidence, gain qualifications, and enhance their skills on the water.

Southampton, The Solent & The Isle of Wight.

"We speak to local boaters every week who love being on the water, but feel held back by marina parking stress or gaps in their tidal navigation," said an instructor and  team member at Solent Boat Training.  "Boating should be enjoyable, not stressful.  Our goal is to give all boat owners and crew the practical, real-world skills they need to enjoy everything the Solent and Isle of Wight have to offer with complete peace of mind."

Solent Boat Training, utilise the local waters in and around the Solent when delivering the many varied levels of RYA training courses.  With so many Marians and Harbours available, those who intend to boat within the local area, will undoubtedly get the opportunity to gain skills and confidence.

Completing a RYA course or one of our many experience building events, will offer the chance for local boaters across Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, and the South Coast, to gain confidence and experience, in their own back yard.

Building Confidence on Home Waters

While the Solent offers world-class boating, its strong tidal flows, busy commercial shipping lanes, and unpredictable weather can present a steep learning curve for local boat owners.

Solent Boat Training’s targeted practical sessions focus on turning nervous boaters into relaxed, self-reliant skippers.  What we can offer includes:

  • Close-Quarter Docking & Marina Handling:
Practical masterclasses designed to eliminate the anxiety of mooring in tight marinas or high-wind conditions.

  • RYA Qualification Progression:
Structured paths and flexible weekend options for RYA Powerboat Level 2, Day Skipper, and Competent Crew for both motor and sail enthusiasts.

  • Tidal Navigation & Solent Passage Planning:
Specialized shore-based and practical workshops focused on mastering local tidal gates, sandbanks, and shipping channels like the Bramble Bank and the Needles.

  • Essential Marine Maintenance:
Hands-on Diesel Engine and VHF SRC Radio courses to keep local skippers self-sufficient and safe when out on the water.

Operating directly out of the River Itchen, Solent Boat Training offers year-round training using its modern, fully equipped fleet, as well as own-boat tuition - allowing local owners to learn the ropes directly on their own vessels, with a qualified instructor alongside for support.

Whether you're preparing for a summer trip to Cowes, planning to cross the Channel, or simply stepping onto a boat for the first time, courses are running weekly with flexible weekday and weekend scheduling.
